Important: Read Me First
Unblock your story. Navigate the journey. Discover the ending.
StuckWriter helps you diagnose why a story has stalled, explore where it could go, and build the route forward. It is designed to stimulate your imagination and thinking rather than write or decide the story for you.
Before you begin
Go to Account and open Subscription to sign in or create your StuckWriter account. Paid analysis requires an active subscription.
Important: making the most of your allowances
Your monthly subscription includes 4 story-analysis credits, 30 development credits and 5,000 detailed-analysis words. Check your remaining allowances in Account → Subscription.
Analyse my story: each fresh whole-story or planning-context analysis uses 1 story-analysis credit. Analyse when you first add material, then again after substantial manuscript or planning changes. Read and reuse the saved analysis between revisions.
I’m Stuck, endings and Build My Journey: each fresh diagnosis, ending exploration or journey request uses 1 development credit. Read the result and consider your next question before requesting another.
Detailed analysis: each fresh pass uses the word count of the scenes or chapters you submit. Choose the passages you want feedback on; repeating a pass uses their word count again.
Reopening and reading saved feedback uses no allowance. Story-analysis and development credits renew monthly and do not roll over. Unused detailed-analysis words roll over while subscribed.
The basic working rule
Develop the story in StuckWriter; write the book in Word or your preferred writing software. Copy and paste useful passages into your manuscript or working notes. Where StuckWriter produces substantial output, use Download text to keep it together.
My Story Ideas
Fixed means you have decided something belongs in your story; Ideas are possibilities you are still considering. StuckWriter keeps Fixed ideas separate from what is already written. If a Fixed idea has not yet been established in the manuscript, StuckWriter can flag it as something that still needs to be incorporated when you revise your manuscript in Word or your preferred writing software.
The ⓘ symbol
Where you see ⓘ, it explains a control, distinction or consequence that may not be immediately obvious. Hover over it on desktop; tap it on a phone or tablet.
Where to start
You do not need an existing manuscript to use StuckWriter. You can start a new story from scratch and develop it as you go. Type your premise, characters, situations, plot possibilities or fragments of ideas directly into Story Setup and My Story Ideas, and add or develop your own material in the relevant fields throughout StuckWriter. Ideas can begin as possibilities and change as the story develops; when you decide something definitely belongs in the story, mark it Fixed.
If you already have material, use Import synopsis / outline for planning material and Import manuscript for written story text. StuckWriter can therefore be used with anything from the beginnings of an idea to a partially written or complete manuscript. Use Analyse my story when you have material you want StuckWriter to assess, and I’m stuck / Develop my story when you want help thinking through what comes next. Detailed scene analysis is optional.
Buttons and actions
Amber buttons with dark text show the main action or next step. Amber buttons with red text warn that an action can remove, replace, reset or discard existing work, so check before continuing. Dark outlined buttons are secondary or optional actions.
Jump in and explore
You don’t need to learn StuckWriter before you start. Jump in, try the different options and see where they take your thinking. You won’t damage your story simply by exploring. The ⓘ symbols are there whenever you want a little more guidance before choosing an option.
Saving your work
StuckWriter automatically saves your project as you work, including where you are in the development process, so you can resume from where you left off when you reopen it. Save & Exit provides an explicit save before returning you to the Project Library and is recommended before closing a project.
Working across devices
Cloud synchronisation can take a short time to reach another device. Before moving from one device to another, use Sync project now in Account and wait for the sync to finish. Then close StuckWriter on that device before opening or resuming the project on the other device. If the second device initially shows an older version of the project, do not make changes yet; allow time for synchronisation to complete, then reopen the project. Avoid working on the same project on two devices at the same time, as StuckWriter may create a conflict copy to protect your work.
Portable backup
When you are signed in, StuckWriter automatically synchronises project changes with StuckWriter after you edit. Sync now remains available when you want an immediate cloud copy. Periodically export your project as a JSON backup. This gives you an independent, portable copy that can be imported back into StuckWriter if required. Text downloads are for reading and working with in Word or your preferred software.
Technical reports
If StuckWriter encounters an unexpected technical error while you are signed in, it sends a limited diagnostic report to help us fix the problem. Automatic reports contain technical details such as the error, app version and browser/device information; they are designed not to include manuscript text, story ideas, passwords or access tokens. You can also send a description yourself from Account → Report a problem.

Cloud projects
Projects synchronised with your StuckWriter account. Opening a cloud-only project creates a local copy on this device. Sync project now immediately synchronises the current project; Refresh cloud project list refreshes the library list. A cloud conflict means two project revisions could not safely be overwritten, so StuckWriter preserved both.
Your project library
Your projects are saved automatically as you work. When you are signed into your StuckWriter account, you can also synchronise them with StuckWriter so they can be recovered or opened on another device. For an additional portable backup, export a project as JSON. Dated snapshots can still be restored if a revision goes wrong.

.json project files. Use Import manuscript for a Word .docx, text or Markdown manuscript.Backups for the active project
0 backupsA snapshot is created automatically after meaningful changes, no more than once every five minutes. The newest 20 snapshots are retained.
Your StuckWriter account can synchronise project data with StuckWriter. Continue to export a project JSON periodically as an independent, portable safety copy you control.

Build your story
New story idea? Start here
Begin with what you already know. Put decisions you have made under Fixed and possibilities you are still considering under Ideas.
Shape the story
Develop the premise, protagonist, conflict, setting and direction as the story takes shape.
Add synopsis / outline
Copy and paste, import, or enter a synopsis, outline, planning notes or story description directly.
Add manuscript
Copy and paste or import story text you have already written so StuckWriter can work from what is actually on the page.
Understand your story
Analyse my story
Analyse the material you’ve supplied and build StuckWriter’s current understanding of your story.
Analyse scenes (optional)
Examine individual manuscript scenes in greater detail when you want a closer look.
Characters
Review the characters StuckWriter identifies and add what you know about them.
Story Threads
Review and develop subplots, mysteries, relationships and other continuing threads.
Story Map
Review and edit the major structural landmarks StuckWriter identifies or you add yourself.
Develop your story
I’m stuck / Develop my story
Diagnose why the story has stalled, explore or refine the ending and build the journey towards it.
Story setup i
Analyse My Story fills what it can from the material you have supplied. Manuscript evidence and planning context remain distinct. Every field remains editable, and your edits take precedence over later automatic suggestions.
Story signal
The app should distinguish an intriguing situation from an active story.
Add synopsis / outline
Type directly, copy and paste, or import a synopsis, outline, general story idea or rough notes about where the story is going. It does not need to be complete or polished. StuckWriter keeps this separate from manuscript evidence.
Your synopsis / outline (optional)
This is your intended trajectory: material you plan, expect or are considering for the story. StuckWriter will not treat it as something already written in the manuscript.
How StuckWriter uses this
Synopsis and outline material helps StuckWriter understand the story you intend to develop. It remains distinct from events and scenes already present in your manuscript.
Find the ending
You do not need the final chapter. You need a destination strong enough to shape the journey.
Ending profile
Reverse story builder
Ask what must already be true for the ending to work. Keep moving backwards until you reach the opening.
Story map i
Major movements identified from your story analysis appear here automatically. A planned landmark is not treated as already written. Edit, replace or add to the map whenever your view differs.
Add manuscript
Paste or import text already written as part of your story. For a synopsis, outline or general story idea, use Add synopsis / outline.
Import
The file is imported into your project locally. Manuscript text is sent securely for analysis only when you use an AI feature.
Text entered here is treated as writing already present in your story and prepared for manuscript analysis.
Local processing handles manuscript structure, scene segmentation and preparation. Editorial interpretation of viewpoint, objective, resistance, change, revelation and consequence is produced only by semantic AI analysis.
Manuscript status
None.
Undo becomes available after a manuscript import.
Detailed scene analysis
Analyse all new or changed manuscript scenes in one run. Completed analyses are saved with each scene, and unchanged scenes are reused.
May take a few minutes.
Scene analysis
No scene selectedCharacters
iStuckWriter can identify characters from your story analysis. Open a character to see what the current story source supports, then optionally add what you know beyond it.
Main characters
0Automatically identified from your story analysis. Your additions are kept separately and are never overwritten when the analysis is refreshed.
Story thread list
0A story thread may be a subplot, mystery, relationship, investigation or internal arc.
Analyse my story
StuckWriter analyses the story material you have supplied to understand the characters, relationships, conflicts, story threads, important events and unresolved questions. Manuscript evidence and planning context remain distinct. This understanding is reused when you ask for help developing your story.
StuckWriter builds one reusable understanding from the material you have supplied while keeping manuscript evidence separate from planning context. If the source material has not changed, the saved analysis is reused.
Story understanding
Not analysedA reusable understanding of the story material you have supplied: manuscript evidence, planning context and Fixed story decisions remain distinct. StuckWriter can use that understanding to populate Story Setup, Characters, Story Threads and Story Map.
What needs attention
What the manuscript now needs
Not builtTurn your Fixed author decisions that are not yet established on the page into a practical development and revision route. StuckWriter identifies the narrative job and where it belongs; you remain the writer of the scenes.
Uses the saved manuscript analysis and Fixed My Story Ideas. The manuscript is not reread.
Detailed scene analysis (Optional)
Separate workspaceUse Analyse scenes in the left menu to run the deeper scene pass and review the saved result for every scene.
What would you like help with?
Once StuckWriter understands the draft, use that intelligence rather than asking the manuscript to explain itself again.
Whole-novel AI analysis
Analyse the manuscript as a sequence of bounded scene readings rather than one enormous prompt. Each result is schema-validated and stored separately; an interrupted run can resume from the next unfinished scene.
Run settings
V16 fast path: scene readings run concurrently, Story Canon is built automatically, then sequence readings run concurrently before the final appraisal. Completed work is cached, so Resume does not repeat successful calls.
Gateway usage
Analysis run
Not preparedPrepare a run after the manuscript has been converted into scene records.
Scene queue
Whole-book synthesis
This synthesis is generated locally from the validated StuckWriter scene records and existing structural engines. It does not require another AI request.
AI bridge
StuckWriter owns the editorial method. An AI provider is used only to interpret prose into a strict StuckWriter schema. The result remains provisional until the writer reviews and applies it.
Provider
For V8 testing, the supplied local gateway reads
OPENAI_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY from the PC environment and listens only on 127.0.0.1.Analysis history
Current scene request
No scene selectedThe request includes the scene text when available, the writer’s current ending context, and the exact response schema. It tells the model not to rewrite the prose.
Returned structured analysis
In manual mode, paste the provider’s JSON response here. In gateway mode, StuckWriter fills this automatically.
Validated interpretation
Story health
The deterministic engine tests ending, causality, protagonist change, momentum, scenes, characters and story threads. AI-derived scene interpretations can feed these tests after author review, but the structural score remains StuckWriter’s own calculation.

Questions the writer must answer
I’m stuck
StuckWriter first diagnoses the unfinished manuscript without being told your intended ending or why you became stuck.
StuckWriter identifies the story that has emerged, the protagonist’s current drive, where momentum appears to weaken, unresolved promises and evidence-based routes forward.
Independent diagnosis
Use your development work
Copy and paste any useful material into Word or your working notes, where you can reshape it into outlines or scenes. To keep the substantial StuckWriter development output together, download it as a clean text file.
